A few items need to travel with you rather than in the van. We don’t pack perishable food, cash, jewellery, or important documents like passports and certificates, please carry these yourself. We also can’t pack firearms, hazardous chemicals, or live plants for journeys longer than a day. If you’re not sure about something, ask us during the survey rather than guessing on moving day.
A few basics make the difference between boxes that survive a move and boxes that don’t.
Use proper double wall packing boxes, not old supermarket fruit boxes, which often lack lids and can tear or crush under weight. Small boxes suit heavy items like books and canned food. Medium boxes suit clothes and toys. Large boxes suit light, bulky items like bedding and lampshades. Plastic crates work too, as long as they have lids and stack safely.
Put heavier, non fragile items at the bottom of the box and lighter, fragile items on top. Fill boxes as fully as you can without making them too heavy to carry, and use scrunched up paper to stop items shifting. Stack plates on their side, not flat, with paper between each one. Tape boxes shut in a straight line across the top and bottom rather than crisscrossing the flaps, which won’t hold under weight once the box is lifted.
Folded clothes, bedding, and linen can usually stay in drawers for a local move, as long as the drawer can be safely removed for carrying if it’s heavy. Everything else, paperwork, trinkets, toiletries, needs to come out and go into a box. Hanging clothes can stay on their hangers and move across in a wardrobe carton, which we bring as standard.
Write the destination room and a short description of the contents on each box. Mark fragile boxes clearly so they get handled with care, and mark anything you’ll need first, like kettles or chargers, as priority unpack.
Start earlier than feels necessary. Begin with rooms you use least, spare rooms, lofts, and garages, and work toward the rooms you use daily as moving day gets closer. If you run out of time, tell us in advance and we can add extra packing help, though we’ll need some notice to fit it around your moving date.
Furniture is usually wrapped in blankets for standard moves. For long distance or international moves, or for anything with a delicate surface, we use extra protective wrapping instead. For particularly valuable or fragile pieces, a custom built wooden crate gives the most protection, we’ll discuss this with you at the survey if it’s likely to apply to your move.

For most people, yes, mainly because of time rather than cost. A small home can need 50 boxes and a large home can need 300 or more, and packing properly takes longer than most people expect. Paying for even a part pack of the kitchen and fragile items alone often saves a full day and avoids the most common breakages, glasses and plates packed in a rush.
For most homes, it’s the kitchen. Kitchens combine fragile items, awkward shapes, and things you still need until the last day, which makes them easy to leave until too late. Starting the kitchen earlier than feels necessary, or booking a fragiles only pack just for that room, solves most of the problem.
Weekday moves, particularly midweek, are usually cheaper than weekends, since weekends are in higher demand. If your dates are flexible, ask us about weekday availability when you get your quote.
Glassware, artwork, electronics, and antiques get extra protection: double walled boxes, acid free tissue paper, bubble wrap, and foam corners for anything with edges.
